Signs and Symptoms

“Symptoms, then, are in reality nothing but a cry from suffering organs.”

~ Jean-Martin Charcot

The signs and symptoms of rhinitis are similar to sinusitis although there are some differences as you will note below:

  • Runny nose and nasal congestion
  • Postnasal drip
  • Thin, clear/white mucus
  • Watery, itchy, and swollen eyes
  • Cough that gets worse at night and early morning
  • Sore throat from mouth breathing (due to stuffy nose) and mucus down the throat
  • Hoarseness, also due to postnasal drip, causing swelling of vocal cords
  • Constant sneezing
  • Sinus pressure and headache due to trapped air and mucus in the blocked sinuses
  • Swollen, dark circles under eyes called “allergic shiners”
  • Wheezing and/or chest congestion
  • Decreased sense of smell or taste
  • Itchy nose, mouth, or throat
  • Insomnia or excessive sleeping
  • Persistent depression from generally not feeling well
  • Irritability with mood swings
  • Severe fatigue that persists despite enough sleep or due to lack of sound sleep
  • Foggy-headedness or feeling “spacey”
  • Fever during an early stage of infection
  • Diarrhea, swollen lips, abdominal pain, and skin rash in a case of food allergy
